Frequently asked questions about carpet re-stretching.

Q. How do I know if I need a professional to re-stretching my carpet in Raleigh, Durham or Apex, NC?

A. Excessive slack or movement of carpet when you walk across it is a indication you need carpet stretching. In addition, if you see lumps, waves or bubbles in your carpet that is a sure sign that your carpets need re-stretching Carpet re-stretching service saves you around 60% - 70% the cost of full carpet replacement in Raleigh, Durham, NC. Also, a tight taut carpet is much easier to clean. You will get better cleaning results when the carpet is tight and free of buckles. Raised buckled carpet is also a unsafe trip hazard

Q. What causes these "waves" “buckles” or "bumps" in my carpet?

A. The main reason waves and buckles appear is unprofessional carpet installation. Over-wetting the carpet during carpet cleaning can be a factor. Exposure to high heat will cause the backing of the carpet to expand and loosen over time. In addition, a "defective run" of carpet from the mill could be the source of waves or buckling in your carpet.

Q. What is carpet re-stretching service?

A. Carpet stretching service is the process of pulling your carpet tight with a tool called a power stretcher. Then the carpet is re-secured around the perimeter. The original installer should have placed tack strips along the edges of the floor. These same tack strips are used to hold the carpet in place. If the tack strips have become unsecured, they must be re-secured to prevent failure.

Q. What are the consequences of ignoring the need for carpet re-stretching in Raleigh, Durham, NC?

A. When buckled carpet is not stretched it will eventually lead to permanent damage of carpet fibers and backing. In addition, the risk of, de lamination and splitting of the carpet's backing will increase if effective re-stretching is ignored.

Q. Do you re-stretch glued down carpet?

A. No, we do not stretch glued down carpet.

Q. Can carpet re-stretching be a D-I-Y project?

A. Maybe. But in most cases no. It take years and multiple jobs for a carpet technician to be skilled enough to properly and effectively re-stretch carpet. On some occasions, carpet re-stretching is more difficult than new installation. Only a true seasoned professional can compensate for the different situations and challenges required to properly re-stretch carpet.

Q. Do I have to be home while my carpet is being re-sretched?

A. Some homeowners prefer to stay home while technician(s) stretch or repair the carpet. Others like to get out of way and let The Carpet Handyman handle business without pressure of being hovered over. Ultimately, it's all up to you and what makes you feel more comfortable. However, keep in mind that if you stay home please give technician(s) ample space to work and move freely.

Q. Can't you just kick the bubbles out of the carpet with a knee kicker?

A. No. Using a knee kicker only may be the reason waves and buckles developed in your carpet. Today's carpet should only be installed (or re-stretched) via the use of a "power stretcher". This is because a power stretcher uses leverage to stretch the carpet backing to render a flat tight carpet.

Q. Should I have the carpet stretched before or after carpet cleaning?

A. Have the carpet stretched first, then painted. This will prevent damage to new, uncured paint on surfaces such as baseboards or trim. The Carpet Handyman recommend re-stretching first, before any carpet cleaning is done. However, we do recommend vacuuming prior to carpet re-stretching service.

Q. What issues would prevent a successful carpet re-stretch?

A. Glued down carpet is not a good candidate for carpet re-stretching. Rooms with furniture, cabinets or shelving, installed on top of carpet that can't be moved is another issue. Another problem is busted concrete slab underneath that does not allow for secure tack strip along the edges. In addition, too many doorways or angles can cause issues especially in hallways.

Q. What do you charge for carpet re-stretching in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, NC?

A.  All carpet stretching repair jobs are not the same. Example: Some jobs have multiple angles and doorways that have to be taken into consideration that another job may not have. Speak with one of our technicians to get a custom price quote for your particular carpet stretching repair needs. The location of your job is also another factor. However, we do have a $135.00 minimum for carpet re-stretching. To get a accurate estimate for carpet stretching, please fill out the contact form below.

Q. What type of warranty comes with a carpet re-stretching service?

A. Our carpet re-stretching warranty is for the lifetime of the carpet, excluded if defective. A carpet technician can go over the specific details of your warranty, answering additional questions you may have.
